The 2012-13 Lorwin Lecture on November 13, 2012. For reasons that seem to have little to do with crime or crime rates, we in the United States have chosen to lock up more than two million of our citizens. The U.S. has the highest per capita incarceration rate in the world, and it is continuing to rise. Michelle Alexander, a legal scholar and former civil rights attorney, examines this phenomenon, and offers her thoughts on what she believes to be the underlying racial biases that drive the U.S. criminal justice system. Alexander’s lecture, on Tuesday, Nov. 13th at 7:30 p.m. in 182 Lillis Hall, will be based on her recent book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness (2010).

His new book A Wider Type of Freedom: How Struggles for Racial Justice Liberate Everyone (University of California Press, fall 2021) provides a survey of transformative visions of racial justice in the United States. HoSang brings together stories of the social movements, intellectuals, artists, and cultural formations that have centered racial justice and the abolition of white supremacy as the foundation for a universal liberation. He taps into moments across time and place to reveal the longstanding drive toward a vision of universal emancipation.

Lappé, democracy advocate, world food and hunger expert, and author of “Diet for a Small Planet,” discusses the power of mind frames–our core assumptions about how the world works–that determine what we can see and what we believe to be possible. She identifies the dominant, disempowering frame now driving our planet toward disaster. She also talks about the empowerment that “living democracy” can provide. Lappé gave a lecture entitled “Getting a Grip: Gaining Clarity, Creativity, and Courage for the World We Really Want” on April 5, 2010 as the OHC’s 2009-10 Cressman Lecturer.

His research investigates the psychological, cultural, and political factors that influence environmental beliefs, attitudes, policy support, and behavior...Anthony Leiserowitz will explain recent trends in Americans’ climate change knowledge, attitudes, policy support, and behavior and discuss strategies to build public and political will for climate action.
